[160-210 days] Cultivated in England since at least 1867, January King is beautiful to behold. Its blue-green leaves come splashed with burgundy, wrapping around a small light-green savoy head weighing in between 3-5 pounds. It’s extremely vigorous and can survive even the hardest of our UK winters. Plant it out in July for cabbage all winter long or sow in early spring for a summer cabbage.
Flavour-wise you can’t go wrong with this variety, and the sweet, crunchy heads taste great stir-fried, roasted, baked, and even steamed.
How do you plant January King cabbage? Sow your cabbage seeds in spring about 1.5cm deep in modular trays. Once the germination cycle has finished and they are about 15 cm tall you can transplant them into your garden with about 45cm space between each plant.
Why are my January King cabbage seedlings dying? If your cabbage isn't being watered enough or the soil around it is dry then this can be one of the causes of your Ormskirk wilting. You can usually stop this by watering at least once a week with about 1.5 inches of water.
How do I stop cabbage worms attacking my January King crop? You can rinse off cabbage worms by mixing 1 tablespoon of washing-up liquid with a pint of water and lightly spraying your cabbage. This is a good way to exterminate the worms but make sure to spray the bottom of your crops to catch the ones hiding!
