Growing carrots from seed is relatively easy however most gardeners do run into some trouble and that's mainly down to the soil conditions. If you have heavy, dense clay soil it's best to grow shorter carrots. Either Carrot Paris or Chantenay Red Core. Both have short roots and do very well in a range of soil conditions including clay!

If your soil is lighter (or at least not clay) fork the area well, and remove any stones or anything that might interfere with the carrots root length, any variety will do well for you then! Growing all year? Autumn King, Short N Sweet or Chantenay Red in buckets is the best way to go. Start in buckets and sow a fresh batch every week to ensure a year-round supply. Place the buckets under cover during colder months to avoid frost damage.

Sowing carrot seeds

Rake the toil soil lightly and using the rake handle create a small channel within the soil. Sow the seeds and carefully rake the soil back over and water. You can thin the carrots out however this will create a larger risk of carrot flies! Lift when ready, and use the smaller and thinner carrots in a stir fry.
