[105 days from transplant] The Musselburgh is a large, mid-season leek well beloved in Britain for its mild flavour, tender stalks, and excellent tolerance to cold. It also happens to be one of the larger leeks, averaging 9-15" long by 2-3" in diameter, with just one leek providing a more than ample portion for the average soup or stew.
A biennial grown as an annual, leeks are one of the most treasured winter vegetables because their frost-hardiness will allow a gardener a fresh supply of onions all winter long. Musselburgh leeks are easy to grow, require next to maintenance, and a rarely bothered by cold, heat, or pests. Great for beginning gardeners!
Can Musselburgh leeks survive a winter freeze? Musselburgh is largly regarded for it's frost hardy growing ability. The vegetable can grow in many conditions and will persist throughout the winter frost.
Why are my Musselburgh leeks rotting? Caterpillars love nibbling on the leaves of your leeks and can tunnel down in the stem causing irreparable damage. The feeding damage can cause rotting in the stem and on the leaves.
Can you eat Musselburgh that has rust? Eating leeks that have been affected by rust is rarely a problem as the edible part is the bulb of the vegetable. All you have to do is cut off the top parts of your leek and enjoy in your meals.
