[45 days] A staple favourite in the British garden, Salad Bowl lettuce is an award-winning non-heading variety with succulent, green leaves and a wonderful, mellow flavour. It’s both heat-resistant and long-standing, and will stay mild and sweet even as the months warm up. Its name comes from the fact that one plant will fill a salad bowl with no need for additional lettuce. The leaves are bright green and frilly and center around a lime-green rosette in the middle.
Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
What is Salad Bowl lettuce? Salad Bowl is the perfect lettuce to grow in your garden. It's easy to grow, does not get bitter in hot weather, and offers tender baby leaves if harvested early.
Can you harvest Salad Bowl lettuce so it continues to grow? Yes. You can cut the outer lettuce leaves just above the crown. Avoid cutting the crown then you can harvest for longer periods of your growing season. Make sure you continue to water your Salad Bowl lettuce to encourage strong growth, even after you begin to harvest some of the leaves.
Should I let my lettuce flower? No. Usually when plants flower it's considered a healthy part of the plant's life. In vegetables that are grown for their delicious leaves, this can cause bolting, leaving a bitter taste and leading to smaller inedible leaves.
