Also known as rutabagas (Swedish turnips), swedes are delicious root vegetables that can be mashed, boiled, or roasted for different flavours. Their winter hardiness makes them an excellent choice for our cooler climes. The colour of the flesh deepens during cooking, and it’s outstanding flavour make this an excellent choice cooked alone, with carrot, or in any number of recipes. Resistant to powdery mildew, Ruby Swede is an AGM winner that will last you through the winter.

How long do Ruby swede seeds take to germinate? Sow your Ruby swede seeds into a firm soil bed from May to mid-June. Plant your seeds 2cm deep in rows with 38cm space apart. Your seeds will germinate in up to 14 days and will sprout quickly. Once the germination cycle has finished and your seedlings are becoming established you will be able to transplant in three weeks.

How big do Ruby swede plants grow? Ruby swedes have yellowish-orange flesh with purple skin that needs to be peeled before cooking. You can harvest most of the plant including the leaves which can be used as a green. One swede seed will produce one swede that will grow to the size of a large apple.

How do you know when Swede is ready to be picked? Swede takes around 180 days to become fully mature and ready to harvest. As the plant grows bigger they begin to push up out of the ground and can be easily pulled up from the cool Autumn soil.
